Lenten Season During the Pandemic
Lent, which begins on Ash
Wednesday and finishes at sundown on Holy Thursday, is a 40-day period of
prayer, fasting, and almsgiving. It is a time of preparation for Easter when we
celebrate the Lord's Resurrection. We pray to the Lord by reading Sacred
Scripture, serve by giving alms, and cultivate self-control by fasting during
Lent. We are required not only to abstain from luxury during Lenten fasting,
but also to abstain from luxury throughout the year.
However, 2021 has been a
crazy year from the start, with the COVID-19 epidemic at the top of the list,
which has brought the entire world to a halt. Catholics around the world have
been experiencing a unique observance of the Lenten season as social
separation, house quarantine, and cancellation of mass gatherings have been
necessary in recent weeks. With churches turning to social media and other
forms of mass communication. Because parishes are open this year, some
parishioners can physically attend the mass as long as they follow the safety requirements.
Additionally, while there are still online masses, the faithful can attend the
Holy Eucharist and receive the palm blessing online.
To summarize, the
Catholic community must engage in these innovative methods in order to truly
celebrate Holy Week while adhering to safety procedures. As a result, the
faithful will not be able to aid in the spread of the virus while still being
able to fulfill their Church commitments.
