The Separation of Ilocos Sur from Ilocos Norte
Kannawidan
Ylocos Festival is one of the famous festivals in Ilocos Sur. It celebrates
Ilocos Sur’s abundant culture and traditions, and its separation from Ilocos
Norte. Due to the Pandemic, unlike previous years when the Kannawidan Festival
is being celebrated for at least a month, this year, it will only run for a
week starting Friday, January 29 until February 5. The provincial government
strictly mandates usage of face mask and SafePass to enter the Trade and Food
Fair in Kannawidan grounds, barangay Tamag.
The
festival shows Ilocos Sur's rich heritage, tradition, history, arts, crafts and
delicacies. Locals revived conventional practices passed on by Ilocano elders
at the annual Kannawidan Festival. The festival of Kannawidan (local term for
traditional practice) was also an opportunity to reinforce the culture of the
Ilocano, remember the sons and daughters of Ilocos Sur who brought honor to the
province, celebrate abundant harvest or just celebrate the spirit of the Ilocano
that continues to push locals to improve the province. Various trade,
agriculture, aqua and livestock festivities were held while the 17-day festival
opened with a show of farm products. Tradition has also been found in the
culinary treats prepared by locals, including delicacies for which Ilocos Sur
is popular. Various municipalities showed goods within the trade fair under the
One-Town-One-Product (OTOP) booth
Festivals
are an expressive way for glorious heritage, history and traditions to be
celebrated. They are supposed to share unique occasions and feelings with our
loved ones in our lives. In order to bring structure to our social lives, they
play an important role and link us with our families and backgrounds. They give
us a day-to-day distraction, an exhausting life routine, and give us some
inspiration. This year’s Kannawidan festival is the 203rd anniversary of
separation of the provinces of Ilocos Sur and Ilocos Norte.
